What is the Ocean Drilling Program? It is the premier international Earth Science research program to understand the dynamics of the Earth's Environment and the Earth's Interior. This can best be done by drilling the ocean floor. Australia, along with 21 other nations, is a partner in this scientific exploration of the sea floor. The program costs $90 million per year, over half funded by the United States. Australia's 1/3 membership of $1.5 million is contributed by 14 Australian Universities, CSIRO, the Australian Geological Survey Organisation, and the federal government through the Australian Research Council. Texas A&M University (Australian Mirror site (fast)/ original site ) oversees the scientific programs and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University manages the instrumentation that collects data from the boreholes. Australia's involvement is managed by a Secretariat currently located at The University of Sydney. Australia is part of the PACRIM consortium (Australia, Canada, Chinese Taipei and South Korea) which is currently administered by the The University of Sydney To access the main ODP site (most up-to date information), click here!
